The District of Columbia Housing Authority celebrated the youth participants of its annual Do Your B.E.S.T. paid summer internship program.

The seven-week Do Your B.E.S.T. (Building Excellence through Service and Training) program provides meaningful summer jobs to youth, ages 14 through 18, living in DCHA communities or who are a part of DCHA’s voucher programs, is in its 22nd season. At the program’s conclusion this summer, each of the 85 interns received honors while they and their families enjoyed a luncheon cruise on The Spirit of Washington.

The youth and their families heard first-hand experiences from some of the interns and also words of encouragement from the program’s managers.

“I am proud of your accomplishments. You are more than your beliefs. You are more than your doubts. You are more than your circumstances,” said Elsie Senat, Special Initiatives and Youth Coordinator in the Office of Resident Services. “Know we at DCHA will always be here to support you.”

The Do Your B.E.S.T. employees work throughout DCHA’s portfolio and also at a number of external sites. Each year, DCHA works to secure more and more positions in companies, non-profits, and outside of DCHA’s portfolio for our youth.

The goal of DYB is to challenge the students to grow professionally and personally from a structured employment program that includes community service and youth leadership principles. The program helps to expose young people to real world experiences early and prepare them for the next phase of their life. These real world experiences build character, self-esteem, and responsibility.

In addition to internships, DYB youth participate in workforce development workshops, community service, and go on a college tour.

Since 1997, through partnerships with more than 260 host sites in private and public sector agencies and organizations, the Do Your BEST program has employed over 1,300 youth.

This year interns were honored with awards such as Most Energetic, Most Persistent, and Dynamic Duo, among others.
