Twenty-eight students were awarded $54,000 in scholarships through the District of Columbia Housing Authority’s Commitment to Excellence Scholarship Program—the largest award amount in DCHA’s history.

The students and their guests were invited to an awards ceremony on August 5 to be honored by DCHA.

“DCHA is proud to serve our families, not only through housing, but also by investing in your future,” said Executive Director Tyrone Garrett to the students. “No matter what goals you have, never let your circumstances or your situations keep you from achieving those goals. You can make a difference in your life, your family’s lives, and your community.”

The annual Commitment to Excellence Scholarship Program accepts applications from students who live at DCHA properties or are Housing Choice Voucher Program recipients. There is no age requirement; however applicants must be attending an accredited college, university, or trade/technical school in the Fall and must have a 2.0 GPA or a 225 GED score.

Continuing education is something DCHA always encourages and the agency wants to support its customers who are working toward that goal. These scholarships, which are paid directly to learning institutions, can pay for books, tuition, equipment, or other items needed to assist our clients’ in their studies.

Also for the first time this year, DCHA awarded the Iris McLaurin-Southall award to the student with the highest achievements in their application. McLaurin-Southall was a former DCHA employee who worked tirelessly to support her customers and helped grow the Commitment to Excellence Scholarship Program into what it is today.
