Members of the Benning Terrace community and local police officers ate, laughed, and played games together during the 35th anniversary of National Night Out.

The District of Columbia Housing Authority Office of Public Safety celebrated National Night Out on the first Tuesday in August at Benning Terrace. The annual event builds a greater community and better understanding between neighbors and law enforcement in a positive and wholesome environment.

“National Night Out is a great time every year. We try to hold the festivities in a different neighborhood each year and this year we are at Benning Terrace,” said DCHA Police Chief Joel Maupin. “Not only does this event enhance our efforts to get to know our neighbors and customers, but it also gives us a chance to demonstrate our new equipment, like the trikes, and explain some of our Summer of Safety initiatives while having fun.”

Maupin also used the time to honor individuals who have served the Benning Terrace community with distinction. The three individuals received a Stakeholder Resilience Award.

Danielle Hamilton, vice president of the Benning Terrace Resident Council was honored for “being a champion for Benning Terrace. She’s worked to bring resources to the community. She has been a constant advocate for change, hope, and opportunity for Benning Terrace—a true stakeholder,” Maupin said as he presented her with a plaque.

As former DCHA Liaison and Office of Resident Services Navigator for Benning Terrace Deborah Jackson was presented with her plaque, Maupin said, “As many of you already know, Deborah has worked tirelessly to provide a different dynamic to D.C. Housing, and more specifically, to Benning Terrace.”

Finally, Robert Edwards, a resident, youth advocate, and student at Virginia State University, received the last award for his work supporting the community.

The community enjoyed music, horse rides, watching the Benning Terrace Soldiers teams take the fields, face painting, and more at the event. There also was a resource fair offering various services available to the residents.
