Some 178 youth have joined the District of Columbia Housing Authority for the summer.

The Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment program has started across the District and DCHA is proud to host these young people, ages 14 through 24.

“There are three things I want you to get out of this summer program,” said DCHA Executive Director Tyrone Garrett at the orientation session held the week of June 24. “I want you to get skills that can be used in future employment, improved communication skills, and a positive experience with mentors.”

He said, “I want you to ask yourself, ‘What can I be exposed to in the summer months that can take me beyond them.”

Garrett instructed the youth to write down three things they want to personally strive for during their employment at DCHA. He encouraged them to present themselves in a professional manner and to provide examples of leadership to their communities.

The youth will be working throughout DCHA and its portfolio through August 2.
