The District of Columbia Housing Authority and Executive Director Tyrone Garrett were featured in a story on The DC Line.

The report was about the recent Homeownership Celebration where seven new homeowners were honored for purchasing their first homes. Federal, DCHA, and community organizations were on hand to hear first hand from the new homeowners about their accomplishments and challenges in their journey to buy a house.

The report focused on one new homeowner, Kimberly Baxter, and her perserverence. DCHA Executive Director Tyrone Garrett praised Baxter and the other homeowners.

“What you saw today was an example of residents moving on with their lives — not only through homeownership, but through so many other things: education, work experience,” Garrett said in an interview with The DC Line. “Everything has grown for them through [participating in] our program, and that’s the real basis of things we try to do every day.”

The report detailed how a DCHA federal voucher customer can enter the program and the work it takes to make it through to the end. Garrett praised the dedicated DCHA staff that works with participants in the Home Ownership Assistance Program.

“It’s not a simple process of just putting people into a program and you shoot out homeowners,” he said. “It is very dedicated, the staff is dedicated, and they don’t consider our customers to be numbers. They really get into it because they want them to be successful.”
