Hundreds of people in the greater Washington Highland community enjoyed the Ferebee Hope Health, Wellness, and Back to School Festival.

The event, held at both the Ferebee Hope Community Center and the Washington Highlands Community Center on August 18, was a joint effort by many city and community agencies to bring services and healthy activities to the neighborhood. In conjunction with the Youth and Family Development Model-NCS Systems, it was a day of fun, food, music, health screenings and clinics, back pack giveaways, and other services.

There was face painting, rides, and a basketball tournament for the kids. For parents there was information on digital breast exams, blood pressure checks by United Medical Center, and workshops on a variety of topics like stress reduction and building self-esteem. “I just want you to leave here living a healthy lifestyle,” said one workshop instructor to the crowd.

Participating organizations and agencies included the District of Columbia Housing Authority; D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation; Health Services for Children with Special Needs, Inc.; Metropolitan Police Department; Children’s National Medical Center; D.C. Department of Health; AmeriHealth Caritas of the District of Columbia; District of Columbia Prevention Center for Wards 7 and 8; The Temple Praise; Anacostia Coordinating Council; Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative; and the mayor’s office.
