More than 100 District of Columbia Housing Authority’s residents were sworn in to represent their communities.

These community representatives comprise the new Resident Council leadership.

“One or two people can make a big difference,” said Interim Executive Director Nathan Bovelle at the swearing in ceremony held on September 7. “You will advocate for, speak on behalf of, and change the lives of all residents.”

Bovelle said that DCHA will help the councils with their work, but also call upon them to get the word out about housing authority business, as well. 

DCHA Board of Commissioners Aquarius Vann-Ghasri, Kenneth Council, and Frank Lancaster were on hand to oversee the council membership take their oaths of office.

Lancaster said he is willing to visit each council if they invite him to their meetings. Vann-Gharsri said she would distribute information and offer training to any council interested. Council encouraged the community leaders to work with each other between communities.

After leading the group in the oath, Office of Resident Services Resident Relations Liaison Fashad Tyler said, “I look forward to working with you to improve your communities.”

Tyler said that swearing in was just the beginning of these councils learning all about the agency. A training retreat will soon be scheduled for the leadership.

“We want to make sure you have the tools necessary so you can fully operate in your new positions in the community,” he said.
